WORKING AND LIVING ON DONAUSTRAßE

WORKING AND LIVING ON DONAUSTRAßE
Neukölln / Berlin

At Donauplatz, in the heart of Berlin’s Neukölln district, an administration building from the 1960s is to be converted for other uses. The plan envisages adding on to the existing long building with its three complete stories and stepped storey, and so to align it with the height of the front section with five floors. A new stepped storey forms the L-shaped conclusion to the whole ensemble. The support structure of the steel frame construction forms the base for the division of the façade, which combines the existing structure and addition into one whole, emphasising the industrial character of the building through use of raw plaster. Wooden windows set up a warm contrast to this.

The existing floors are still to be used for commercial purposes, while various usages have been developed for the floors above: micro-apartments, townhouses, or other commercial units are feasible here. Conceptually, the structure has been created for start-up work spaces and offices, with residential space for an internationally operating clientele, who stay in the city on a project-by-project basis.
