ANGSTLAREAL

The construction of a new community hall, day nursery and youth centre on the ‘Angstlareal’ brings together several cross-generational aspects of communal living into a single central place. The design created by Michels Architekturbüro organises the various usages in such a way that individual areas can be used both separately and communally. That enables a range of synergies with great flexibility, creating a new meeting point at the very heart of the historical location. Deliberately moving the structure away from the existing building emphasises its autonomy within the context of urban planning, and so the building’s special significance for both public and social life in the market community.

In appearance, the building takes its cue from existing topologies of the community. In particular, the cubic shape as well as façade made of brightly whitewashed bricks create associations with buildings typical of the region. The reduction to seldom-selected, high-quality materials and colours allows the various functions to appear as a unit, both within and outwardly, and ensures sustainable durability for the building.

Through the freed-up positioning of the building on the property, differentiated external spaces are created, each with its own specific qualities of stay, such as the public square to the west, or the greenified areas on the southern and eastern sides.
