The special school building in Friesoythe, which dates back to the 1970s, is to be expanded. The goal is to create more space for modern school operations with special learning and therapy facilities on offer. The design envisages extending the existing building by two atrium buildings and developing it by means of a connecting structure with mainly communal usages. Orientation in the building is facilitated by the clear division of the ground plans as well as a variety of visual axes. The new and existing structures merge into one due to the unified façade design and the continuous two-floor design.
The centrepiece of the ensemble is the light-filled foyer between the new building and the existing one, as well as between the forecourt and the playground. It serves as internal place to aid both orientation and distribution, enabling one central, communicative space. From here, all areas of the school can be quickly reached. While the classrooms are aligned towards the exterior, the inner courtyards create a protected atmosphere for therapy and group rooms. At the same time, the courtyards provide optimal light for the interior areas, offering peaceful, green places of retreat.
