HEIDI AND PETER

An idyll in the middle of the city: for two new multi-occupancy buildings in the Swiss quarter in Berlin-Lichterfelde, the awarding authorities took as their inspiration ‘Heidi and Peter’ from the romantic children’s book from Switzerland. The aim is to create two family-friendly, residential buildings embedded in a green setting, with large exterior spaces and varied apartment types. The Michels Architekturbüro design takes up the idea of a mountain landscape and transfers it to the urban context: while surrounding, heavily greenified terraces jut out like rock outcrops, large glazing offers residents unimpeded views of greenery. At the same time, the materials, mainly raw concrete and wood, have Alpine associations.

In total, both buildings comprise 21 owner-occupied flats ranging from 55 to 145 m² in space. Included in this are four generous penthouses. Moreover, the possibility exists of connecting the smaller garden flats of the mezzanine, and a communal roof terrace opens up a wonderful ‘distant view’. Despite the intense utilisation of the site, all the flats offer a high level of residential comfort, a criterion that led to first place in the competition, along with a range of other qualities found in the design.

The greenified terraces jut out like rock outcrops, offering every flat ample space outdoors.
Large glazing creates a bright atmosphere and enables unimpeded views of greenery. The planting of the terraces serves, in addition, as a privacy screen for residents.
